Start Your Own Referral Circle
Your community already shares recommendations. ClickFirst helps you organize them.
Every neighborhood, workplace, crew, and community has people who know the good businesses — the reliable plumber, the honest mechanic, the restaurant that never disappoints. Those recommendations travel by text, Facebook post, and word of mouth every single day.
A Referral Circle on ClickFirst puts all of those recommendations in one place — searchable, organized, and available to every member of your community whenever they need them.
Here is how to start one.
Who should start a Referral Circle?
You do not need to be a business owner or a tech expert. You need to be someone your community trusts.
Good candidates for starting a circle:
- Neighborhood association leaders and HOA board members
- Apartment complex community managers
- Airline crew representatives and base coordinators
- Church, mosque, or synagogue community leaders
- Coaches, team managers, or club organizers
- Office managers and workplace culture leads
- Parent group organizers and school community leaders
- Anyone who already gets asked "do you know a good...?"
If people already come to you for recommendations, a Referral Circle formalizes what you are already doing.
Step 1 — Create your ClickFirst account
If you do not already have a ClickFirst account, creating one is free and takes less than 60 seconds.

After verifying your email you will be taken through a quick welcome screen. Select "I am joining as a community member" — you do not need a business listing to create and manage a Referral Circle.
Step 2 — Create your Referral Circle
Once logged in:
- Click "Groups" in the main navigation or go to clickfirst.com/groups/
- Click "Create a Group"
- Give your circle a clear, specific name
Good circle names:
- Pasadena Isle Referral Circle
- United Airlines Crew Network
- Riverside Church Community
- Oakwood HOA Trusted Businesses
- Chicago Office Recommendations
Avoid vague names like:
- My Group
- Referrals
- Friends
A specific name tells new members exactly what they are joining and why it matters.
- Write a short description — two or three sentences explaining who the circle is for and what kinds of referrals members share. This description appears on the group page and helps members understand the purpose.
Example description:
"This referral circle is for Pasadena Isle residents to share trusted local businesses — plumbers, electricians, restaurants, landscapers, and everything in between. Every referral comes from a neighbor who has personally used the business."
- Set the privacy to Private — this is the default and the correct setting. Private circles keep membership trusted and spam-free.
- Click Create Group.
Your Referral Circle is live.
Step 3 — Generate your join code
A join code is a private link you share with your community. Anyone who has the link can join your circle with one click — without needing a personal invitation from you for each individual member.
This is the most powerful tool for growing your circle quickly.
To generate your join code:
- Go to your group page
- Click Manage
- Click Join Code in the admin navigation
- Click Generate Join Code
- Set the expiry date — 30 days is a good default for most communities
- Copy the join link
Your join link will look something like:
clickfirst.com/groups/join-code/?code=ISLE-7X9K
Step 4 — Share your join code
This is the most important step. A circle with no members has no value. Your job is to get your first 10 to 20 members in the door as quickly as possible.
Where to share your join code:
Neighborhood circles:
- Post in your neighborhood Facebook group
- Share on Nextdoor
- Include in your HOA newsletter or email
- Post on your community WhatsApp or GroupMe
- Put a flyer in the mailroom or community center
Crew and workplace circles:
- Share in your crew or team WhatsApp group
- Post in your company Slack or Teams channel
- Send in a crew email or bulletin
- Share at your next team meeting or briefing
Faith and community circles:
- Include in the weekly bulletin or newsletter
- Share from the pulpit or at community gatherings
- Post in the community Facebook group or app
Your message when sharing:
"I have created a private referral circle for [our community] on ClickFirst — a free app where we can share trusted local businesses with each other. Join using this private link and start sharing the businesses you trust: [your join link]. It takes 60 seconds to sign up and it is completely free."
Step 5 — Seed your circle with referrals
The single biggest mistake new circle leaders make is waiting for members to add referrals before the circle has any.
Add your own referrals first.
Before you share the join code — or immediately after — add 5 to 10 referrals yourself. When new members join and immediately see real referrals from a real person they trust, they understand the value instantly and are far more likely to add their own.
To add a US business referral:
- Go to clickfirst.com/refer-a-business/
- Search for the business
- Click Refer This Business
- In the modal — add your personal note and check your circle in the groups section
- Submit
To add an international referral:
- Go to clickfirst.com/refer-internationally/
- Fill in the business name, city, country, and category
- Add your personal recommendation note
- Check your circle in the groups section
- Submit
What makes a great referral note:
Bad: "Good plumber."
Good: "Called Mike on a Saturday morning when my water heater failed. He was there within two hours, fixed the problem, and charged a fair price. I have used him three times now. Highly recommend."
The personal detail is what makes a referral trustworthy. Encourage your members to write the recommendation they would give a friend — not a generic review.
Step 6 — Encourage members to contribute
Once members start joining, send a follow-up message encouraging them to add their own referrals.
Sample message:
"Welcome to our Referral Circle! We already have [X] referrals from neighbors who trust these businesses. Now we need yours. Think about the businesses you use regularly — your plumber, your dentist, your favorite restaurant, your landscaper. Adding a referral takes about 60 seconds and helps every member of our community. Go to clickfirst.com/refer-a-business/ and share who you trust."
Managing your circle
As the circle admin you can:
Generate and share new join codes
Join codes can be set to expire after 7, 30, 90 days, or 1 year. You can revoke a code at any time and generate a new one. This gives you control over who joins.
See who joined via your join code
In the Join Code section of your group admin you can see a log of every member who joined using the code — including whether they were a new ClickFirst member or an existing one.
Manage members
In the Manage section of your group you can see all members and remove anyone who does not belong.
The circle grows itself
Once your Referral Circle has 15 to 20 active members who each contribute a few referrals, the circle becomes self-sustaining. Members tell other members. The value grows with every referral added. New members join because they want access to the recommendations already there.
The communities that benefit most from Referral Circles are the ones that start fast and seed generously. Your first 10 referrals are the most important ones you will ever add.
